Why is orthodontic treatment for children important?

There is not an exact age for children to start orthodontic treatment. However, the American Association of Orthodontists suggests that children see an orthodontist by age seven. Orthodontic treatment will lead to a healthy and esthetically pleasing smile because it ensures proper spacing and alignment of the teeth. Most children have a mixture of baby and adult teeth by this age, which makes it easier for an orthodontist to treat and diagnose problems with the teeth and jaws sooner, eliminating the possible need for surgery when they’re older.

What are the benefits of early treatment?

After your child’s first visit to the orthodontist (ideally when they are seven years old), they will be able to assess potential jaw and tooth problems. Early orthodontic treatment is beneficial because a young child’s teeth have not fully erupted yet, which allows the orthodontist to guide the growth of jawbones and facial bones to address any potential problems as early as possible.

Early treatment aims to prevent certain oral issues from developing in the future and to guide the growth of facial and jawbones to prepare the correct spacing for permanent teeth.

Here are the benefits of early orthodontic treatment in children:

  • Correct finger, thumb, and pacifier sucking
  • Improve minor speech issues
  • Avoid permanent tooth extraction
  • Correct the spaces between crowded teeth
  • Adjust the width of upper and lower arches in the jaw
  • Promote the growth of your child’s jaw

When your child should see the orthodontist

An orthodontist will recommend treatment for a child with baby teeth if they have any of the following issues:

  • Finger, thumb, or pacifier sucking that affects the jaw growth or teeth
  • Teeth that don’t meet at all or meet abnormally
  • Crowded front teeth
  • Teeth that are spaced far apart
  • Crossbites
  • Underbites
